Program Overview

Welcome to Windy City...

Chicago area's oldest and largest club since 1991. Windy City's Owner and Director, Katie Beach, is an Olympian and former Division I Head Coach with extensive national and local relationships.  Our staff is available for player and family support, collegiate questions and program guidance. Our coaches are former collegiate athletes who have experienced the requirements for competition in collegiate play. 

In our club you will find professionally run programs for nearly all ages, skill levels and commitments. We offer activities for girls and women as young as kindergarten through adults. We satisfy beginners wanting to experience the sport for the first time, players that want to get more training throughout the year and the serious travel team player.

 

Our Mission...

Windy City Field Hockey is a Chicago-based field hockey program that emphasizes excellence through the development of individual skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Our philosophy is to offer a competitive field hockey environment focused on the development of technical proficiency, tactical understanding, and the physical well being of our players in a constructive atmosphere.


ROOTS- Kindergarten through 8th graders

Roots is for our youngest players that want to experience the sport for the first time or continue to learn and develop. There are events for the Roots players in Fall, Winter and Spring. Each session is six sessions long for 1.5- 2 hours.

  • Fall is one day per week of league play on outdoor filled turf with equal attention to skills and learning to play the game "competitively".
  • Winter is one day per week on an indoor surface and focuses primarily on skill development.
  • Spring is one day per week of league on outdoor filled turf with equal attention to skills and learning to play the game "competitively".

ACADEMY - 6th through 12th graders

Academy is for players that love field hockey and want to develop their skills without a huge commitment of time to the sport. They may sign up for individual sessions in Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer. They train one time per week.

  • Fall is in the Roots Program for 6th-8th graders only. Fall is 2 hours one day per week for 6 weeks on an outdoor filled turf with a skills component and league play.
  • Winter is 1.5- 2 hours, one day per week for 6-8 weeks on an indoor filled turf surface and focus is primarily on skill development and small game play.
  • Spring- NO PROGRAMS FOR ACADEMY PLAYERS; any openings in the Spring Select program is on a first come - first serve basis.
  • Summer is 2 hours one day per week for 6 weeks on an outdoor filled turf surface and has a small skill component and majority of competitve league play.

SELECT- 6th through 12th graders

Select is for players that are more committed to developing their skills and wish to spend more time playing field hockey. Players not on a Travel Team that want to tryout MUST sign up for WINTER SELECT. Players may sign up for Select without trying out for Travel. Select Players are required to sign up for three seasons, winter, spring an summer. They may elect to be alternates for the Travel Team an are not required to attend tournaments unless an opening occurs. 

  • Fall is optional and is 2 hours one day a week for 6 weeks for 7th and 8th graders in the Roots League on a filled turf surface. It has a skills component plus competitive leauge play.
  • Winter is 1.5 hours one day during the week AND our new 2017 WCFH March Madness Select Tournament on Tuesdays & Thursdays in March.
  • Spring is 2 hours one day per week for 6 weeks on filled turf surface and has a skills component plus competititve league play
  • Summer is 2 hours one day per week for 6 weeks on filled turf surface with main focus on competitive league play.

TRAVEL TEAMS

U14, U16 & U19 Travel Teams (6th graders through 12th graders)

Players in the U14, U16 & U19 Travel program are there as a result of trying out in the Winter Select program. Players wishing to get into the Travel program must sign up in the winter for SELECT. Players already on Travel will for the most part remain on those teams, although their skills will constantly be reevaluated. New Travel Teams for U14, U16 & U19 will be announced at in early March 2015.

Travel is for players that are very serious about their commitment to field hockey. They are willing and able to make the sacrifice of time necessary to train and compete. The U16 and U19 Travel Teams are required to train 3 times per week in the winter, 2 times per week in the spring and 1 time per week in the summer. The U14 Travel Teams are required to train 2 times per week in winter, 2 times per week in spring and 1 time per week in the summer. Travel players are required to sign up for three seasons – winter, spring and summer. They are also required to attend all Travel Team tournaments.

  • Winter is 1.5 hours during the week and 2 hours on the weekend for eleven weeks on hard court surface and 2 hours one day per week for 8 weeks on filled turf surface
  • Winter Indoor Travel is optional and based on a tryout to be held in November.
  • Spring is two days per week for six weeks on filled turf surface. Weekday session is 1.5 hours and weekend session is 2 hours
  • Summer is 2 hours one day per week for six weeks on filled turf 
  • Fall is optional (but strongly encouraged for Travel) and is only for 7th and 8th graders. It is 2 hours one day per week for six weeks on a filled turf surface. It has a skills component plus competitive league play.

U10 & U12 Travel Teams

Players in the U10 & U12 Travel Program will have the opportunity to tryout in the spring for the summer travel season and in the fall for the winter indoor travel season.

  • Summer Travel Team is 6-12 practices in June & July. Tournaments (1-2) are mandatory events.
  • Winter Indoor Travel Team is 1-2 practices a week from November through February. All tournaments including the National Indoor Tournament are mandatory events.

 


STRIDE – 6th through 12th Graders

Windy City Stride provides additional and advanced instruction for 6th through 12th grade athletes. Each group will have a 1:6 coach to player ratio and will be limited to 12 field players and 2 goalkeepers. Stride is for the serious player in Academy, Select or Travel to get extra coaching and touches on the ball to help them become better all-around players. Players in Stride wish to focus and work very hard at a higher level. Stride sessions are coached by our Travel coaches & Olympian Katie Beach. All Stride sessions are 1.5 hours in length, go for 6 sessions and are on an indoor surface.

COLLEGE STRIDE - Graduating Seniors and Collegiate Players

College Stride is 1.5 hours one day per week for six weeks on indoor or outdoor turf surface. Players will receive advanced skills training, conditioning circuits, and core training exercises. College Stride will assist athletes in preparation for the start of their pre-seasons. College Stride is offered in spring and summer sessions.


OPEN ADULT LEAGUE

Windy City provides a well-run, fun and competitive program for college players and adults in the summer. This is open to any rising College Freshman through adult player.
